As we start off the new year, many automakers have released at least one new electric vehicle (EV) for the 2023. Many of them are midsize SUVs – a segment that barley existed as recently as two years ago. The 2023 Nissan Ariya, has some real advantages that set it apart from others.

As Nissan’s first electric SUV, it has also already been Newsweek Editors’ Pick and continues to flourish. The simple experience that it has to offer is something that does not go unnoticed. The other is an exceptional cabin full of near-luxury details at a non-luxury price.

A look inside

Passenger Room and Comfort

As Kelley Blue Book says, if you have not spent much time in EVs yet, one of the first things you’re likely to notice when you climb into one if the exceptional space. Nissan calculated that the Ariya offers 96 cubic feet of passenger space – similar to what other EVs have to offer. What sets it apart from others, however, is their exceptionally comfortable front seats. Nissan has developed its unique Zero Gravity seats using NASA studies. They use 14 pressure points to keep the body as close to neutral posture while driving.

The experts at KBB test drive more than 300 cars every year, and their editors consistently walk away impressed with the long-drive comfort of Nissan seats.

Features and Tech

Designers gave the Ariya a trendy minimalist look, with few buttons or switches to crowd the dashboard. A pair of 12.3-inch screens are mounted together in a single housing as if they were one wide screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and Amazon’s Alexa is built in. Between Alexa and a “Hello Nissan” voice command system, you can do everything from setting the temperature to planning routes without taking your hands from the wheel.

Every Nissan Ariya gets Nissan’s ProPilot Assist assistance features like adaptive cruise control. Higher trims offer an advanced ProPilot 2 system that allows for hands-off highway driving in some situations.

Materials and Design

Nissan did a superb job translating its usual design language into something more modern and sleek. It shares an obvious kinship with some of the brand’s best designs. You can see the Maxima in its roofline and Murano in the subtle curves it shows in its profile.

As far as color goes, Nissan designers have created some impressive two-tone combinations for the Ariya: Sunrise Copper Pearl with a floating Black Diamond Pearl roof is one of the more elegant looks of the 2023 model year.

The theme of elegance continues on the inside. Most electric cars now share a similar look – clean, simple lines with most controls run through a pair of screens. But Nissan has put art into the mix by adding a wide, copper-hued horizontal bar bisecting the dashboard.

Cargo Room and Flexibility

The Ariya offers 23 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 60 with the seats folded down. What is worth noting is that the space is cleverly utilized. The flexible cargo area has a pop-up divider and under-floor storage space organized into several cubbies. The motion-activated liftgate helps you get to it when your hands are full.

The cabin is well-lit, too. Soft, diffuse lighting emanates from the floors and door panels. It provides plenty of light for passengers without interfering with the driver’s site.
